Summer is here, and with the sunshine comes BBQs, backyard fun… and unfortunately, some uninvited guests. At C&C Disposal, we’ve seen it all—raccoons, squirrels, and even the occasional bear making themselves right at home in trash bins across the region. Don’t let your garbage become a buffet. Here are our top tips to keep summer critters out of your trash:
1. Secure Your Lids
Critters are clever, but most can’t get into a tightly sealed lid. If your trash bin doesn’t have a locking mechanism, try using a bungee cord or a strap to keep the lid snug. Just be sure it’s something you can easily remove on collection day.
2. Bag Smart
Double bag meat scraps, bones, and anything especially smelly—those scents are like neon signs for wildlife. Better yet, freeze particularly odorous waste (like fish scraps) and toss it into your bin right before pickup.
3. Clean Your Bins
Old spills and lingering smells can attract pests even if there’s no fresh trash. Hose out your bins with water and vinegar or baking soda once a month to keep things clean and critter-resistant.
4. Take It to the Curb on Pickup Day
Don’t set your trash out the night before, especially if you’ve got known wildlife in your area. Putting it out in the morning (as close to your pickup time as possible) limits the window for animals to explore.
5. Use a Trash Enclosure
If raccoons or bears are regular visitors in your neighborhood, consider storing your bins in a shed or building a simple wooden or plastic trash enclosure. This adds another layer of protection and can improve curb appeal too!
