The start of a new year naturally makes us take a closer look at our routines—what’s working, what isn’t, and what we want to do better. While most resolutions focus on health or finances, January is also a great time to rethink how we handle our trash and recycling.

After the holidays, waste tends to pile up quickly. Gift wrap, shipping boxes, food packaging, and decorations can fill bins faster than expected. But improving your trash habits doesn’t require a total lifestyle overhaul—just a few intentional changes.

Small Habits with Big Impact

One of the simplest improvements is breaking down cardboard boxes before placing them in your recycling bin. Flattened boxes take up less space, help collection run more smoothly, and ensure room for everyone’s recyclables.

Another important habit is keeping recyclables clean. Food residue can contaminate an entire load, which means materials that could have been recycled may end up in the landfill instead. A quick rinse makes a real difference.

Finally, avoid what’s known as “wish-cycling.” If you’re unsure whether an item is recyclable, it’s better to leave it out. Putting non-recyclables in the bin can cause more harm than good.

At C&C Disposal, we see firsthand how these small actions add up. When households recycle correctly, collection is more efficient, materials are recovered successfully, and less waste ends up where it doesn’t belong. This year, focus on progress—not perfection.
